Overall, as nice as a vet experience can be. The facility is clean, staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and a very important factor, you are not likely to be left waiting for a long period of time here. Keep being great, Valley Vet!

Background: Our 4 year old Bullboxer required TPLO surgery. Recommended to Dr.Marcus Hetzner by our local veterinarian. Valley Vet is located in Watertown, NY, which is a 2.5 hour drive from my home. The good: Dr.Marcus Hetzner Our dog is recovering at an incredible rate. She is walking without a limp for the first time in years. Also, he’s a nice guy. Takes time to explain to you what is going on. Doesn’t talk to you like you’re dumber than him. Even brought me a tub of a seasoning rub he recommends for venison based in a convo we had in our first meeting. The vet techs who assisted in the care of our dog also seemed great! The bad: While Dr. Hetzner came highly recommended and, as far as we know so far, lives up to that recommendation, his prices were the highest of anywhere else we looked. (Even after they brought their price down $600, which we very much appreciated, their price still exceeded the next highest we found by $300) The ugly: The people who answer the phone and run the office are incredibly condescending and rude. The website says to coordinate dropoffs for the night before with the office. When they told me that I must have my dog to their office between 7:30 AM and 8:00 AM, I inquired about dropping off the night before. I was told unequivocally that they would not allow it. Maybe update your website then. Further, I dropped my dog off at 7:30 AM for a surgery that was not performed until the very end of the day. I was told they always do TPLO surgeries at the end of the day. Fine. Then maybe let people traveling hundreds of miles drop off a couple hours later? The complete inflexibility of the office staff and the way they speak to people makes me think they have become too accustomed to working in a military town where they can bark orders at people and those people will just instinctually fall in line. I don’t do that anymore. For my follow up visit I inquired how long my dog’s visit may take. Traveling that far requires me to miss work. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to inquire about the length of the visit in order to plan my day and anyone who has any respect for you and your time will understand this. The people here clearly do not respect you or your time. The answer to me asking if I could be given a rough estimate as to how long the follow up visit would take was “No.” This confused me. I was even more confused when the tech who came to get my dog that morning easily told me the visit would take no more than an hour and a half. Even Dr. Hetzner disappointingly went out of his way to make sure I know about all the people who travel long distances for his services. I never complained one time about the travel itself, but when someone is paying thousands of dollars and traveling hours to get to you and asks for small accommodations that your website says you offer, or a rough estimate on the length of a visit so I can tell my employer whether or not I will make it back to work that day, being patronizing about how busy you are and how many people travel for your services is antithetical to good customer service. We get it; you are professionals with a job to do and a schedule. So are many of your customers. A little respect and a modicum of flexibility goes a long way. Takeaways for us: While we are thrilled with the service Dr Hetzner provided our pup, the complete disregard for me as a professional and a human being and the flippant attitude and inflexibility of the office staff here is a deal breaker for us. The next time I spend $5K somewhere it will be somewhere where I feel respected, not where a condescending secretary speaks to me disrespectfully and acts like I work for her and not that I am a paying customer. We will be taking any future business of this nature elsewhere.
